hot mess

my paper about Lilly Ledbetter is just a hot mess. I totally have to work on it this week end.

The Lilly Ledbetter Act is an Act to amend the title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. Specifically, to clarify that a discriminatory compensation decision or other practice that is unlawful under such Acts occurs each time compensation is paid pursuant to the discriminatory compensation decision or other practice, and for other purposes.

Her story chronicles her plight and her determination and grit, as she puts it (Ledbetter & Scott, 2012), to fight for equal pay. Lilly Ledbetter worked for Goodyear and was anonymously notified that she was paid a significant amount less than her male counterparts. She then brought a lawsuit against them, which was rejected by the lower courts, and then, subsequently, took it to the Supreme Court.

The reason this is important is because wage earnings among women, who are now 47% of the working force, affect the economy, policy and the social fabric (Damaske, 2011). . This is not just a women’s issue, but a societal one.

Damaske, S. (2011). For the family: how class and gender shape women’s work. New York, NY: Oxford University Press.

It is important that women know their value. (Brezezinki 2011). We are a commodity with skills, intelligence and an education to contribute to society. As Mika Brezezinki puts it, “my greatest enemy was myself. The failure to communicate rested upon me” (p.4). We are negotiating from a place of power, and need to speak up, (p. 8).

Give me some of that hot mess:
