Day 9: Feeling Protected

Bobbie gets on my nerves with her oh wait, I’m judging again. But she does have a Long Island Accent.

thank you for teaching me how not to be: staying angry about housing, about staying stuck and complaining, about second story. I have a job interview on Monday.

Our task is not to judge people for who they are, but to love people as they are. It’s the only path to self-love because as long as we see guilt in others we will see it within ourselves. Without forgiveness there is no inner peace.

I can release this anger.

It’s okay to move forward. I’m open to seeing the situation in a new way. The anger keeps me stuck and I can let it go.

so I can move forward, write my story and play harp for others and I am thinking of starting a podcast.

Stop b*tching about work if you want to get ahead

No one likes a complainer. Here’s what to do instead. And no, we don’t mean quit immediately.

 

Stop complaining and start making things happen in your career.

Work is work. It’s not always going to be fun.

You’re going to have boring projects, difficult assignments, and co-workers who occasionally (or often) make you want to quit, start a Slack channel detailing how annoying they are, or complain to anyone who will listen. But that can backfire—big time.

“If you spend too much time complaining to others, you could be labeled “the complainer” and co-workers may avoid you,” says Angela Copeland, founder of career coaching company, Copeland Consulting.

“It’s also possible that information you share will be passed along, but you won’t have control over the message so it may be incomplete or inaccurate.”

You might have valid concerns, but the last thing you want (if you also want a promotion) is to be seen as a constant complainer or the office gossip. Monster spoke with experts to come up with more productive alternatives to b*itching about work—at work. (Yes, it’s possible!)

Identify what you can (and can’t) control 

Before complaining to a co-worker, Nancy Halpern, founder of the New York–based executive coaching firm, KNH Associates, recommends completing this exercise. (And no, it doesn’t involve a punching bag.)

First, write down all of your grievances. Pick the five that bother you the most and put them in sequential order. Once you have your top two priorities, list two or three things you could do to improve the situation.

“If you can start thinking like an active problem-solver you’ll feel more in control and a lot more optimistic about changing the situation,” she says.

Turn your complaints into suggestions for improvement

Your co-workers will respect you more (and be more willing to change) if you don’t just point out problems, but offer solutions.

“If what you’re constantly complaining about is something that can be fixed quickly, a better way to talk about the issue is to give constructive criticism” says professional development coach Lorraine Brown.

“This way you’re not just complaining but offering a solution.”

If you have way too much on your plate and are constantly working long hours, you could suggest that they hire an associate. Offer to manage them and you’ll get the help and valuable managerial experience. Win-win.

Vent on your own time

There may be problems that are outside of your control such as having competitive co-workers, lack of work-life balance in an industry where long hours are required, or constantly needing to travel for work.

You may have known this when you accepted your offer but it doesn’t mean it has to be your forever job.

Brown recommends practicing self-care when you’re (finally) out of the office.

“Do yoga, go to a therapy session, write about it in a journal, or vent to friends who are not your co-workers. Just be sure not to bring your complaining to the workplace,” she says.

Stay positive (and productive)

Focus on what you are grateful for (even if it’s just a paycheck) as you problem-solve or look for a new job.

Research has shown that cultivating an attitude of gratitude is beneficial for your mental and physical health. (And probably your ability to resist yelling at that guy from marketing for missing a critical deadline…again.)

“Make a list of all the reasons you are grateful for your job—whether it’s money, experience, friends, or even the free coffee,” suggests Lori Scherwin, founder of career coaching firm, Strategize That.

“Focus on what you enjoy and that is what you will see and appreciate. Find success in every failure and a lesson in every setback—it helps keep you moving forward,” Scherwin coaches.

Get a new job

When you’ve tried to change your attitude but things still aren’t getting better, sometimes there’s only one thing to do: find a new job.
